Neue Seite 1

"Language is dying, when people die, people die when a language dies" - these words from the song Alexander Gorodnitsky can be considered as an epigraph for the film. Millions of Jews were shot by the fascists and their collaborators, always remains in the land of Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia ... Together with them almost disappeared the language in which they talked - Yiddish. This film contains unique archival materials. It can be measured, as research work in the field of history, literature, poetry, music, documentary filmmaking. It is very thoughtful in content and composition of the film, marked by hand of talented people - authors, operator, director, editor...

New poems by Alexander Gorodnitsky expressive and concise. He managed to find the exact words that describe the essence of the tragedy experienced by Jewish people in the first half of XX century in Europe. The film tells about the irreparable loss suffered by European Jews during the Holocaust, and after him, and the tragic fate of the Yiddish language. This journey in search of the Yiddish language in the cities and towns of Belarus (Minsk, Mogilev, Bobruisk, Śmiłavičy, Volozhin ...), as well as Israel.
The film was first shown by the authors in August 2008 in several cities in the U.S. with great interest to his main topic: Yiddish language as part of world culture and the people who are trying to save it. Unfortunately, the authors did not receive permission to film a demonstration on the channels of state television of Russia.

One verge of his 75th birthday, the well-known Russian poet and scientist Alexander Gorodnitsky travels to Belarus where his parents were born and raised and where, in the fall of 1941, the Nazis had murdered his entire family. He travels throughout the country hoping to find his grandparents' grave and the remnants of the Yiddish language. His search eventually brings him to Israel where his son and granddaughters now live. They speak Yiddish! The fates of several people are portrayed in this dramatic characterization of the demise of the great Yiddish culture which gave us the likes of Sholem Aleichem, Marc Chagall, Shmuel Galkin, Haim Soutine, and Solomon Mikhoels. The film contains poems and songs written especially for this project and performed by Alexander Gorodnitsky himself. Excerpts from his new poem "In Search of Yiddish" and unique early twentieth-century archival footage are also included."

Authors: Alexander Gorodnitsky, Yuri Khashchevatsky, Natalya Kasperovich, Semyon Fridlyand, Cinematography by Semyon Fridlyand,  Music Composed by Gennady Tsypin. 2008.
